Location: First Floor Cancer Learning Center | $2,500,000
The Huntsman Cancer Learning Center (HCLC) is a nationally recognized cancer resource center and is one of the largest for the lay public in the United States offering more than 2,700 books, videos, audiotapes, CD-ROM’s booklets, newsletters, and educational displays. Cancer information inherently changes very rapidly and the collection requires frequent updating in order to provide the most accurate information in cancer prevention, treatment, education, and care. | The HCLC offers up-to-date information on all aspects of cancer, such as prevention, information on specific cancers, coping with diagnosis, and grieving. Resources are written for cancer patients, their children, family members, and friends, as well as the general public and health professionals. Special populations are a particular focus and many resources are available in Spanish.
The HCLC averages 600 visitors per month and has had more than 30,000 visitors since it opened September 1999. More than 4,000 visitors have received specialized assistance from a cancer information specialist who is available to answer questions and aid in the search for cancer information. The goal of the HCLC is to encourage and empower patients and the public to become active participants in their health care by increasing their knowledge and understanding of cancer topics. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesdays until 7 p.m. Location: Third, Fourth, & Fifth Floors Cancer Research Laboratories | $1,000,000 per lab The third, fourth, and fifth floors house the laboratories that are at the heart of our translational research mission. The collaborative research approach between doctors and scientists, with an emphasis on investigating the genetic basis of cancer, makes Huntsman Cancer Institute one of the leading cancer research organizations in the country. |
Focusing on various aspects of a single problem—cancer—scientists in the 24 HCI labs work in teams to advance knowledge of the disease and use their discoveries to develop new treatments for it. Open laboratory design encourages collaboration and shared resources such as DNA sequencing, tissue acquisition and lab equipment. HCI has expanded its investment in innovative, collaborative research initiatives. Because HCI conducts both laboratory and clinical research, we are able to offer hope by bringing superb researchers and physicians together. We provide the rare combination of researcher and gifted care giver. We balance advancing care through research, and caring for the patients who need our help today, in order to optimize successful outcomes. Currently, translational research projects are being supported in many areas of cancer concern, including breast, pancreas, sarcoma, prostate, brain, melanoma, and leukemia, to name a few.
